My luthier friend believes that the sides and back are solid koa wood. Mine came drilled for straps. The case is the most padded soft gig bag I have encountered. Really heavy duty. The fretts are a little rough on the sides, but I had a friend file them down in just a few minutes. I'm a beginner and have had a few issues, but they were due to my ignorance. Thank goodness for the internet and YouTube videos which taught me how to successfully replace the E string I snapped the first time I tuned it. Gah! It has to be tuned each time before playing, but the internet says that is normal too. The instrument is beautiful. I love the wood color and design around the hole and top edge of the body. My only disappointment is the tuner won't tune the C string. G, E, and A all come in bright green, but you never even see the C string show up in the meter display. I have to go to YouTube to tune that key. I'm delighted with the quality of the padded carrying case and the neck strap is silky smooth. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I just wish the dang tuning meter worked.
