You can use the RJ-45 connector (Standard Ethernet cable) to connect it to your modem and use it as a 'Router' allowing you to connect MULTIPLE WiFi devices to it (through to the internet and/or your local LAN). You can choose: 1-secure connections using the SSID and a password to log-on the router or open. 2-Set the SSID for the router, 3-Set which channel you want it to operate on (thus avoiding crowded locl channels) the bandwidth you want (20Mhz or 40Mhz) 4-Set the IP (URL) to any configuration you want. The router can also be set to: AP mode (I use this for VERY remote locations to link the WiFi micropcontrollers to the main router in my house, that way the main router assigns ALL IP addresses, no conflicts!) Router mode, Repeater mode or Client mode. You can also set a password to log onto the router itself to change it's programming/set configuration. This little credit card sized router works GREAT! Yes, it has limits! Speed, number of devices connected and internal programming limits. However; the $$$$$, very low, size=tiny and with it's TINNY current draw, you can set it up remotely using 3 Li 18650 batteries when power may not be available! **Q: does this use any authentication (encryption) or just a password and all data is sent in the clear?** A: TR1 is designed for travelling, convenient for business and with good price. This router only needs few simple steps to set up. It does not provide the professional router functions. It can act as an AP to provide WiFi to an existing network or as a router if you need to take a direct internet connection and share it with multiple WiFi devices (providing dhcp, etc). Or you can use it as a WiFi to Ethernet adapter (connect a wired device to your network via WiFi - perfect for connecting non-wireless devices in an area that you can’t easily get an Ethernet cable to) or as a WiFi extender. In extender mode, you connect it to the network you want to extend and it just repeats that signal, allowing you to reach further.Price was $10 when I bought it. It arrived yesterday and when I looked at it, the price had been lowered to around $7 and I seriously thought about getting a couple more but decided to try it out some more first. Today, it’s over $12 😔I’ll wait until it’s on sale again and buy a few more for various uses.Update: it’s down to $8 so I’ve purchased 2 more to use connecting Ethernet printers in areas that don’t have an outlet but can get WiFi. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Ethernet to wifi!! It works!!! *by F***1 on Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2019* Edit: I bought another one to use at home. in addition to what I wrote below, I use it to convert my old MacBooks WiFi into WiFi to visitors (which I do not want to give my WiFi password too)! To set up protected mode, connect the box to a power supply, connect laptop to it (choose from WiFi, do not connect eithernet cable yet!!), go to the address in the manual, and then choose protected and add password and press save. Now connect with eithernet cable, and you’ve got yourself WiFi for the whole house. Pretty simple.Previous review: This thing is very small, very convenient and portable. It’s one of those gadgets you buy and never know when you’ll need it until you do. My job WiFi is full and they couldn’t add my personal laptop to the network, and they wanted me to use one of theirs, but I don’t like using laptop computers because they are old and I’m just used to mine. My job however has eithetnet outlets here and there. I was thinking to myself “ I wish there was something I could use to make that Ethernet outlet into a WiFi” and then it downed on me.. it’s 2019 and probably someone already invented something like that!! I google “ Ethernet to WiFi” and ethernet to WiFi bridge was the first result. I searched in amazon and found this to be the cheapest option, I thought “what the heck, let me try it.” I bought it and boom, it actually works and now I have WiFi at work!! This thing cane without password though and I don’t want people to use it and slow it down, so the first thing you’d want to do is connect your laptop or phone to the WiFi through this device and then go to the website on the instruction manual ( it did take me s couple of tries to open that website though, I guess it needed sometime to set up the website or something) but once I got to the website, I was able to change the security from AP (no password) to “secure” and I changed the device name and password and now I enjoy a protected WiFi network at work! I didn't like this at all so I unplugged the router and threw it in the trash.
