I have lots of pin cushions, even a Joe Biden doll that I enjoy stabbing my pins into, but they just hold pins and nothing special and I never thought I needed anything else - just a place to put pins while I'm sewing. However, after sewing for the past 8 months, I started to notice that some of my pins were getting dull. Needles I will replace right away, but I didn't want to just toss my straight pins, so I checked on line for how to sharpen pins and needles. That's when I discovered emery sand and then I found this really cute pin cushion on Amazon. I love the design, especially the little lady bug on the top (there is no sand in the lady bug). It really does look like the one in the picture. I thought it was a little pricey, but I just ordered 5 cups of emery sand to make more pin cushions for friends and the sand alone can be a little expensive, so this isn't too bad. It says not to store your pins in the pin cushion. While I'm sewing I circulate them quick enough that it won't matter, but when I take a break I put the pins back in their original plastic boxes. I do find my pins go through the fabric easier. I also like the bottom of the pin cushion because it helps keep the sand inside and also provides a little non-skid feature. I still plan on making some of my own with a sun flower pattern I have, but I'm still glad I purchased this one. If you don't want to make your own pin cushion, but still want sharp pins, this is definitely a nice pin cushion. First of all, they are heavy and can be used as a weight to anchor your fabric when cutting it. They also are stable when inserting and removing pins. Secondly because they are filled with graphite, they are just abrasive enough to sharpen your pins and needles. This was important for me because my pins were very dull after 30 years of use and they would not perforate my old pin cushion. These saved me from having to purchase new needles and pins. Each pin cushion has a cute handmade little critter on top and the fabrics used are bright and pretty.
