Safe meant I wanted something BPA free (at a minimum). This cup is made from Tritan co-polyester, which is an excellent plastic that was designed from the ground up by the Eastman company to release no endocrine disrupting compounds and they've published some pretty good science to back it up. Now if this is something you really care about (perhaps like me you have small children or your wife is pregnant or trying to get pregnant) be aware that if you torture this plastic, it will release compounds with a potential for estrogenic or androgenic activity. But for normal use it's about as safe as a plastic can get.Tritan is pretty heat resistant and in theory it's "bottom-rack dishwasher safe." That being said, I keep mine in the top rack both for safety and to keep it looking new.Now the price for these cups can be pretty crazy, and paying $10 for a kids cup is silly.
