A 4.5 inch tall X 10.5 inch wide layer could pass through the leveler and be trimmed by it. The highest (setting 1) the cutting wire is meant to go is 2.5 inches above the counter surface. Therefore thickest even slice expected would be 2.5" (2 1/2 inches). (I supposed there's a bit of leeway to get another 1/2 inch from it, if you wanted to slide the wire above 1, you could get a 3" thick layer.) The lowest wire setting is 0.75 (3/4) inch from the surface. If your layer fits, but is too tall to trim the top on a first pass, you can make your first cut, you'll have no trouble slicing the top off on a second pass. I have a narrow wire cooling rack that I use to lift my layers (baked in 10" diameter round pans) when I pass the cutter through them. Lately I've made a few American Flag cakes requiring 13 thin layers (alternating red and white). I couldn't imagine attempting it without the leveler. I get neat thin layers.
