It's a continuous, gentle stream. I have no idea what the pump can do if set on max because I don't want to risk a fountain of water hitting the ceiling of my study. But all you have to do is twist the lever in the front, so adjustment is easy. It's set on a timer, so the pump is experiencing the stress of frequent off/on cycles and so far, it's not complaining. I'm not going to rate it on filtration because it's really only able to filter enough to protect itself. For that, it works fine. I think that any fish that's larger than a fry would be okay. And it's quiet! All I hear is a hum and if a fan is on I can't hear it at all. I've got enough room in the tub for another small plant setup, so that's next on the list.
